Why are younger brothers higher in the line of succession than their older sisters?

Because traditionally men have been considered to make better monarchs, particularly in the days when kings were expected to lead their men into battle. In many countries, women were excluded from the succession altogether. Even in countries where they are not excluded, it has generally been the case that a female has inherited the throne only if she has no brothers.
